• There are a lot of different paper textures to choose from, so you can make your drawing appear as if it was sketched on plain paper, watercolor paper, canvas, or any number of surfaces.
• There are a lot of different brushes to choose from, which will give your lines texture and fluidity. Examples include: watercolor, acrylic, oil, chalk, airbrush, etc. There are also blenders, which you can use to smooth two colors together, or simply to smooth your lines or add shading, much like you’d use a tortillion when drawing with pencil or charcoal.
• The translucency and color blending is quite realistic. If you swipe an orange airbrush over a blue section of your drawing, it blends the two colors, just as would happen in real life. You don’t get solid blue crossing solid orange. Rather, you get a sort of muddy purple. You’d better brush up on your color theory!
• The special effects are very specific. Brushing salt over an airbrushed section of your painting doesn’t do anything. But if you brush salt over a watercolor section, it will produce a speckled effect, just like in real life. This attention to detail is great!
• There’s also a photo-editing section to PE5, which allows you to make your photographs look like they’ve been painted. Unfortunately, I found many of the special effects to be too strong—they blurred the image beyond recognition. But some were mild enough to make a self-portrait look sketched, without ruining the image.
• The program is designed to work well with a graphics tablet. I plugged in my Wacom Intuos and it worked immediately, without any adjustments or calibrations required. I’d guess that it would be extremely difficult to use PE5 without a graphics tablet.

Drive Cubelet
Contains a motor and roller wheels for moving on a horizontal surface. The Drive Cubelet only moves in one direction, slowing to a stop with a value of zero and moving faster with higher input values.

Rotate Cubelet
One face spins at a rate corresponding to the block’s input values.

Speaker Cubelet
Chirps according to the block’s data value. Contains a small speaker and an amplifier.

Flashlight Cubelet
The Flashlight Cubelet emits a focused beam of light from a powerful white LED. Off with a value of 0, the light becomes brighter with higher input values.

Bar Graph Cubelet
Displays the block’s value as a light-up bar graph. The value is normalized to the number of points on the bar graph so that a maximum value results in a fully-lit bar graph.

Knob Cubelet
The Knob Cubelet has a potentiometer embedded in one of its faces. It outputs a 0 when turned fully counterclockwise, and a 1 when turned clockwise.

Brightness Cubelet
Detects the amount of light hitting it’s sensor. The Brightness Cubelet has an analog photocell that responds to varying light conditions. Expect values near zero in a dark room, and values near one when the sensor is in front of a bright light.

Distance Cubelet
The Distance Cubelet detects how far it is from an object. It uses infrared light and is accurate between 10 and 80 cm. The sensor is directional, so it outputs the distance to the object in front of the sensor. At 10cm, the block will output values near 1, and toward 80cm it will output values near 0.

Temperature Cubelet
The Temperature Cubelet contains a tiny thermometer (actually, a thermistor) that detects temperature. It’s calibrated to output a 0 in freezing conditions and 255 in hot, sunny conditions of about 35C.

Inverse Cubelet
The Inverse Cubelet calculates a value that is the opposite of the values it receives. Specifically, the Inverse Cubelet will (weighted) average its inputs and then output a value of one minus that average.

Minimum Cubelet
The Minimum Cubelet can accept any amount of data but only outputs the smallest value that it receives. It can be handy for creating an on-off switch for a robot and also for using with a Distance Cubelet to build robots that avoid falling off the edge of a table.

Maximum Cubelet
The Maximum Cubelet accepts many different inputs but only passes along the one with the greatest value. With a maximum block, you could easily build a robot that performs an action only when a sensor reads a value over a certain threshold (set by a Knob Cubelet, perhaps).
